Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Damien Balmet

Responsible for Mumtalakat’s strategic and business development agenda, Mr. Damien Balmet is Mumtalakat’s Vice President Corporate Development. With 11 years of experience in consulting, Mr. Balmet advises Mumtalakat’s CEO on its strategic plan and recommends business development proposals. Mr. Peter Andersson has been working at Ericsson since 1985. Tareq Hijazi

Tareq has been newly appointed to spearhead Microsoft operations in Bahrain and Oman. Prior to this,Tareq successfully led the Microsoft Commercial business in the UAE since 2006.
Tareq Hijazi joined Microsoft Corporation in March 2001 as the Technology Specialist covering the Jordan territory, part of the Eastern Mediterranean countries comprising of Lebanon, Jordan, Cyprus, Syria, and Malta. In 2003, Tareq assumed the role of Corporate Account Manager looking after Financial Services, Telecommunications, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing and Commercial organizations.
Tareq has fifteen years of experience in the Information Technology industry. Before joining Microsoft, Tareq consulted a number of organizations in the field of Information Technology and Computer Aided Design (CAD) automation and advanced visualization techniques, amongst which he worked with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as a consultant for various projects in the engineering field office departments in the Middle East focusing on computer aided design and automation. Hala Sulaiman

Marketing Communications Manager at Tamkeen

Hala is a bilingual communications consultant with extensive expertise in the local and Middle Eastern market in media as well as marketing communications. Known for her ability to develop and deliver integrated marketing communications strategies from scratch, her strengths have been particularly instrumental in communicating with a wide selection of stakeholders. Her most recent challenging assignments were communicating the role and rewards of Tamkeen in its work as a catalyst for change in Bahrain’s labour market, as well as being part of the strategic communication team for the Kingdom of Bahrain’s July 2011 National Dialogue. With regional and international marketing expertise, Hala has an extensive network of government, private, and media relationships at her command. She combines this with unique specialised capabilities in journalism, writing skills and audio visual broadcasting and prolific PR and media management expertise to deliver a result-oriented integrated marketing communications package.

Ziad is currently senior director and head of the Middle East and Central Asia region for Qualcomm. Ziad joined Qualcomm in 2008 as director of business development in the Middle East. Prior to that, Ziad spent more than 10 years at Ericsson in numerous technology, marketing and sales positions across the Middle East and West Africa. Ziad holds an MBA from Notre Dame University and a BE in Computer and Communications Engineering from the American University of Beirut.

Zulfe Ali

Vice President Corporate Finance at Mumtalakat

Mr. Zulfe Ali has more than 15 years of experience in investment banking across a variety of debt and equity origination and distribution roles. He heads the Corporate Finance function at Mumtalakat and plays a key role in defining and implementing Mumtalakat’s capital structure and financing strategy. Prior to joining Mumtalakat, he worked in the Acquisition and Leveraged Finance group of JPMorgan in both London and New York. Prior to that, he worked at Banc of America Securities in San Francisco as a member of the Institutional Equities team. Mr. Ali holds an MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson School of Management and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Carleton College in the U.S.

Joseph Kirikian

Investment Manager at Mumtalakat

Mr. Joseph Kirikian joined Mumtalakat in January 2010 as Investment Manager in the Private Equity team and is currently responsible for the execution and analysis of investment/divestment activities. He also looks at the development and performance of a number of portfolio companies, in addition to overseeing and supporting the Representative Board of Directors.
Prior to joining Mumtalakat, he worked for Istithmar World on restructuring portfolio assets in Dubai. Ameer Ameeri

Ameer joined Mumtalakat in December 2010 as Corporate Development Associate, and was responsible for strategic planning, business development and special projects. He then joined the Private Equity - Direct Investments team as an Associate in September 2012, and is currently responsible for monitoring the performance of portfolio companies, developing new investment opportunities, and supporting value creation initiatives.
He started his career as an Analyst in the Public Sector Reform department at the Bahrain Economic Development Board, and then moved to General Electric International as Market Analyst where he was responsible for market research and business development, supporting the various GE business units.

Ali Alsabbagh

Merter Unsal

Budoor Kamal

Budoor Kamal is an Assistant Manager at the Business Advisory Unit in Bahrain Development Bank (BDB). She started her career in the Business Advisory Unit supporting entrepreneurs in the process of starting a business and providing further assistance through counseling, linkages and networks with SME supporting institutions, and training programs.Her daily involvement with entrepreneurs fall under support in business idea identification, business planning, and access to finance. In addition, Budoor conducts numerous presentations to promote BDB’s products and services, introduce entrepreneurship and build further awareness, development of business plan, train the trainers, etc. These are conducted at schools, universities, events on entrepreneurship and SME development, and through the entrepreneurship training programs offered by BDB. She also has experience in developing and managing special schemes that are related to supporting entrepreneurship in various areas. Budoor is responsible of the SME Support Group quarterly meetings, a member of the Advisory Committee in Tenmou (business angels company) and a member of the Distressed Tenants Committee at Bahrain Business Incubator Centre (BBIC). Yousif Mufeez

With over five years of experience in the field of business advisory and counseling. Yousif started his career in the Business Advisory Department supporting entrepreneurs in the process of starting a business and providing direct assistance through counseling and linkages with various SME supporting institutions, and training programs. He is specialized in conducting a concentrated assessment to identify the potential threats and weaknesses in addition to the guidance in setting up key elements that are expected to assist entrepreneurs in growing their business enterprise. Racha heads the marketing operations for Microsoft in Bahrain and Oman. She joined Microsoft in 2008.
